| Lexington is a city in the northern part of the state of Kentucky. With a population of 297,000 it is the sixty-third largest city in the United States. The MSA area has almost 475,000 residents. The history of Lexington dates back to 1775, even prior to the formation of Kentucky as a state. The climate ranges from a winter low temperature of 22 degrees to summer highs in the mid 80s. Precipitation averages about four inches per month. Median family income is around $53,000. Many large companies and corporations have a presence in the Lexington area including Hewlett-Packard, Lexmark, Toyota, Affiliated Computer Services, Trane and United Parcel Service (UPS). The University of Kentucky has nearly 11,000 employees. Area attractions include Kentucky Horse Park, Rupp Arena, where the University of Kentucky basketball team plays, Raven Run Nature Sanctuary, Aviation Museum of Kentucky, Martin Castle, Kentucky Theater, and Mary Todd Lincoln House. The Lexington-Herald Leader is the area's main newspaper. Sports teams in the area include the University of Kentucky Wildcats and baseball's Lexington Legends (with the Houston Astros). Local main highways include Interstate 64 and I-75. LexTran provides public transportation. |
